Build A Better Birth- Childbirth Education Done Differently!
Nothing makes me more excited than thinking outside the box, seeing the world through a new lens and imagining what the world would be like if women and families weren’t scared of birth anymore and dare I say it, that they were actually EXCITED for it!
So why does this seem like such a stretch? That the day you give birth can be the most satisfying and empowering day of your life? I think one of the main reasons the idea of birth being a beautiful experience is so foreign to most people is that we’re living in a culture that is missing the mark in terms of the way we are educating people about the process itself. We’re scaring them, whether that’s our intention or not, and it doesn’t have to be that way.
So let’s take a step back and think about this for a minute… What was your first memory of birth? What was the messaging you received? I’ll never forget my first birth memory. I was 7 or 8 and a family friend had a new baby. I remember my mom telling us that the baby arrived and that the mom got this cool new thing called an epidural that meant she was frozen from the waist down and couldn’t feel the pain! How exciting right? Well, that was the beginning of my childbirth education whether I wanted it to be or not. It deeply embedded the idea that birth was painful and when things are painful they feel scary. These subtle stories are extremely important because they shape the way we view things at a very early age.
As I got older and started seeing birth in the media, it always involved a screaming mom being rushed to the hospital, panic all over the place and the end result was a doctor swooping in to “save that baby”. Well, that looks terrifying! Why would anyone want to go through that? The media never shows us the peaceful home birth. They never show us women birthing in a circle of support and dim light. The media doesn’t care about what’s normal, they care about ratings. Unfortunately, the drama is what they need and our culture is paying the price by only being shown an exaggerated version of medicalized birth.
So if that’s the media’s contribution, what are our current education classes looking like? Traditional childbirth education classes are very technical, sharing the nuts and bolts of anatomy and of course going into great detail of all the possible things that could go wrong. It can feel like an overwhelming amount of information with no follow-up, no time to debrief and figure out what all this information means to you and your baby.
For me and my team, education is absolutely everything and we want to change the way we communicate with families as they prepare for their upcoming birth. We are living in a very interesting time where women and families are waking up and realizing they are not okay with the status quo. That their birth matters and they are looking for a new approach.
With that said, we are very proud to launch our brand new Build A Better Birth program! Our goal for this program is to change the way women and family’s access education, but more importantly support, as they plan for their upcoming birth experience. Using the power of technology we want to create a strong online community of both like-minded women who want to experience a better birth as well as providing access to trained birth professionals to mentor, provide evidence based education and above all inspire our clients to view birth more positively!
Although there is no right or wrong way to have a baby, research shows that women walk away from their birth experience feeling positive if they felt listened to, their space was respected and they were in the driver’s seat making decisions for themselves. That is our top priority! Helping women gain the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their care. Improving birth creates an opportunity to improve the postpartum experience as well and that has lasting positive impacts on the entire family unit.
So if you are looking for a new way to plan for your upcoming birth, one that is filled with encouragment, support and a strong community, we would love to work with you! When you know better you do better and we want to help in any way we can.
